It was a sudden change. The resigning of the Athletic Director. Emptiness and confusion brought morale to a low for all spring sports at Chapin. That all changed on April 23rd, 2009.

On April 24th, then Myrtle Beach Head Varsity Football Coach Scott Earley resigned from his position to accept our vacant Athletic Director position. Chapin High was immediately ecstatic upon hearing this news.

Earley was named AAA Football Coach of the Year in 2008 and had just led Myrtle Beach to a state title.

The signing of Earley brought immediate change to the Chapin Eagles varsity football squad.

Earley has instituted the “Breakfast Club” and other programs targeted at getting the team to a new level of fitness and strength. These additions have already paid off well for the Eagles. The Eagles already possess an important win over ranked 2A powerhouse Strom Thurmond and are set for an extremely competitive season in a tough division in Division 4-AAA.

But Coach Earley is pushing for perfection, and not cockiness. “We’re taking it one game at a time, really,” said Senior Defensive End Ryan Elliot. “All of the players listen to what Coach Earley says and are trying to build off of that. And it has paid off so far.”

Football is not the only program at Chapin that has benefited from Earley’s presence. Many sports, including Football, Girls Tennis, Cross Country, Track, and Boys Basketball have already received new uniforms and equipment sponsored by Nike. Other sports, who have not yet gotten new uniforms, are expected to recieve them when their current uniforms and equipment expire within the next few years. Cross Country has also received a long awaited timer, a budget casualty that has finally come to fruition.

Coach Earley has also decided to retain the District’s GPA policy for athletics. All Chapin athletes have to maintain an average of 2.0 for all classes they are enrolled in during the current school year.  Athletes who drop below the 2.0 are supposed to attend enrichment until their grade rises.

As Coach Earley prepares for his first full year as school Athletic Director, he has many challenges ahead of him, but also has made many improvements to our school’s athletic programs and expectations. “I believe that good things happen to people who are fair and do things right and that is what I am bringing to Chapin.” said Coach Earley.
