HEALTHCARE BILL MAKING PROGRESS

Healthcare reform has picked up a major boost. Despite worries and attacks over potential healthcare reform costs, the Congressional Budget Office announced that the bill would cost $829 billion over a decade and reduce the federal budget deficit by $81 billion over that period.

 

SWINE FLU VACCINE SCARE

Recent polls show that almost one third of parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children for the swine flu. Concerns over the amount of testing on the vaccine and its possible side effects have turned people away, despite government urges to get the vaccine as soon as possible and assurances that it is safe.

 

AFGHANISTAN COMMANDER ASKS FOR MORE TROOPS

General Stanley McChrystal is publically requesting up to 4000 more troops in Afghanistan, saying that without more troops, the United States effort will not succeed. McChrystal, the top US Commander in Afghanistan has been criticized for his public request and has since had a brief meeting with President Obama on Air Force One. The White House is now considering several options in order to deal with increasing violence in Afghanistan.

 

TSUNAMI CAUSES DEVESTATION IN PACIFIC

143 people were killed in Samoa and thousands are homeless after an 8.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami. 32 others were confirmed dead in American Samoa, as well as nine others from neighboring islands. A national day of mourning was held for the 143 confirmed dead in Samoa on October 9.

 

OBAMA WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

The Nobel Prizes for 2009 were announced and in a surprise turn, President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Obama himself admitted he was shocked. “To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who have been honored by this prize,” Obama said, hours after winning the award. Obama is only the third sitting US President to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
