Teacher cadet’s experiences

Walking into the Mrs. Brinkley’s room, anyone would guess it’s probably just another typing or business class Chapin offers.  However 1A offers a different group to her room; a room full of young high school future teachers.

She only has one class for teacher cadets on one day, but on that day cadets learn to appreciate teaching and the importance of future teachers guiding our children to higher potential.  Not only do cadets talk about teaching, but they actually get to participate.

Field experience is a very important part to the teacher cadet class. Going out into elementary school classrooms and getting hands on experience is vial to the understanding of how teaching operates.  Mrs. Brinkley explains, “The purpose of the field experience is to help students formulate an image of what it is like to be a teacher.”

While doing the field experience, cadets can actively join in with the class and even help the teacher.  “While doing their field experience, cadets would be expected to observe and be given a participatory role in the class,” said Mrs. Brinkley.

However it’s not all fun and games, it takes some work to be a cadet.  Mrs. Brinkley explained some of the activities cadets would be involved in.  “Activities in which the cadet can participate include-but are not limited to- the following: calling roll, grading papers, reading to small groups, teaching small groups, tutoring individual students, making bulletin boards, and teaching a short lesson to the entire class.”

Some of the cadets see this opportunity as a key opening a door to their future.  “I want to be a teacher so this is great experience for me,” said senior Ally Smetana. There are also cadets who aren’t looking to be teachers.  They may just want to work with kids someday or there just trying something different.  “This class helps me learn a lot about children, and I’m looking forward to working at the elementary school,” said senior Carly Clamp.

Whatever their reason for being a cadet is, there is one thing for certain.  They will have experience in teaching that they can take with them wherever they go.
