Live in your world, play in ours.  This video gaming system slogan represents a whole new generation of video gamers who find addiction all too familiar.  The rise in technology and communication has sparked a new and improved video game experience.  This phenomenon is better known as online gaming.

Online gaming is a internet connected community of users who play each other through various forms of matchmaking. “Online gaming really gets your blood pumping,” said Sophomore Alex Bueno.  The video game industry has seen expansion from 2D graphic based games to unbelievably realistic war games such as the newest and most popular shooting game ever.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has seen a popularity growth of almost unrealistic numbers of followers.

“Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2 is probably the single most hyped up game of all time,” said Senior Seth Saler.

It made $310 million in its first 24 hours of sales.  Most video game fanatics see the Call of Duty line as very accessible, since the game is available on PC, Playstation 3, Xbox, and even in some cases, the Nintendo Wii.  But beyond the glorified C.O.D. video game lies the more addictive and adventuresome games.

Arguably the most popular and addictive game to be played on computer operating systems is World of Warcraft.  Also known as “W.O.W.”, this particular game is “a role playing game where the more you play, the better you get.” Said Junior Carson Barnes.  “Not only do you get better, but you get better at dominating people.”

World of Warcraft’s popularity is often associated with various marketing advertisements featuring Mr. T and his own personalized character.

Another popular game found on the computer is Facebook’s application “Farmville”.  Farmville is an interactive game where one plants and harvest crops in order to gain experience and move up levels.  The overwhelming number of Facebookers on Farmville often overloads the game server.

“How could I not play Farmville?” said Barnes.  The main attribute to Farmville’s popularity is associated with its everyday use, making users spend time frequently in order to succeed in the game.

Online gaming has allowed for people of all ages to enjoy realistic experiences without moving an inch off of the couch.  Although most gamers are thought to be male adolescents, many teenage girls participate in video games as well.

“Gaming is something that I have always liked all of my life, and now that Modern Warfare 2 has come out, my life is complete,” said sophomore Katherine Kane.

The range of people from all over the world make the gaming industry very attractive and even useful for social networking.

“I have met a lot of hot local singles through playing games online,” said Sophomore Alex Bueno.

“I really enjoy playing Xbox live with other people, but sometimes the older men creep me out,” said Kane.

Friends, like Alex and Katherine, play with each other all the time without having to ever leave the house.  The variety of users may not always be a positive when related to those particular instances, but the versatility of video gaming network availability has allowed for such overwhelming popularity to exist.  Video games are evolving into the new addiction, beyond drugs.
