Views from the mall

Multi-pierced tattooed guys with Mohawks strut by the stores, while following close behind are a group of girls with purses in hand and caramel macchiatos in the other.  Working at the mall, employees sometimes feel as if they have seen it all.  Senior Camryn Clements explains, “I see a lot of freaks with different colored hair.”

Not only do they see a lot, they also go through a lot.  With Christmas on its way, sales have definitely started to rise.  There’s a two worded phrase that makes every mall employee want to quit their job- Black Friday.  Everyone works harder and hours are longer.  Sales are up and so is the stress.  The lines seem like they will never end, legs seen like they are going to fall off, and everyone’s irritable.

“Black Friday is terrible and extremely busy, and the lines are very long from open to close,” explained Latoya Williams, manager of Auntie Anne’s.

Students also feel the pain of Black Friday.  Senior Julie Anna Kerchusky says, “I don’t want to be trampled by the crazy people on Black Friday, so I try to be careful.”  However, the entertainment that comes with the holiday shoppers diminishes some of the stress.

Besides the interesting people and the holiday craziness, the mall is a good place to work.  Everyone knows everyone.  The Foot Locker guys know the Yankee Candle girls  who know the part-time people at Ann Taylor and so on and so on.

Even the worst day working at the mall can sometimes be worthwhile.
